I read this morning that supermarkets can restock most things very fast which is not the case with toilet paper because the supply chain is different. They said that the demand for different things is very high atm, and you can see the effect best on toilet paper because they can not restock it like with other things.

Our PM just announced 2.weeks of mandatory isolation for anyone entering the country. NZ made the same decision yesterday. Cruise ships are also banned until further notice. Shit is getting real now.

Yep, crazy. All my gigs being cancelled (well not yet but sure to be because the musicians won't actually be able to come here), pretty much all sport grinding to a halt - not sure what I'm going to do with myself.

Ugh, I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve totally been back in “lurker” mode on here just popping in quick from time to time.
Panic buying has definitely hit here too and our schools have shut down. At first when I heard friends around me talking about the toilet paper shortage, I didn’t take it too seriously and thought they were exaggerating. I had literally been at the store a couple of days before and it was fully stocked with tp. Then we went to the store this weekend and I actually felt a little fear about the whole thing for the first time. Toilet paper aisle completely cleared out in every store we checked, along with staples like pasta flour etc. even yogurt was completely gone (and I don’t get that one since it’s perishable and doesn’t last long). Half of the produce was empty too. Everything else looked very picked through.
We also had a hard time finding bottled water. We don’t drink our tap water because our town has problems with water filtration/quality at the moment. I keep wondering if this will get better in a couple weeks and stores will restock...or if this is just the beginning. I tried to stock up on what food I could so that we can hunker down for a couple of weeks while my kiddo is home from school. But I tried to do it responsibly and not take any more than we needed. It seems a lot of people are hoarding and I find it upsetting because some people aren’t going to get what they need.
We have enough tp to last around 3 weeks because I always keep extra anyway. I got some extra kleenex as a backup. I guess we’ll see where things are at after that. This definitely has made me more mindful about using things sparingly.

It seems a lot of people are hoarding and I find it upsetting because some people aren’t going to get what they need. my dads friend was verbally accosted the other night while buying toilet paper - i guess he ended up with the last four pack and people were telling him he 'didnt need it as much as other people' and was offered cash on the spot by people who wanted it instead - strange times

Yep, I feel sorry for the elderly, the disabled and those who simply don't have the cash flow to stock up on items. We have a lovely couple who live locally that both have an intellectual disability and the man also has some fairly significant physical impairments. I often see them at the supermarket. They obviously can look after themselves to a fair degree, but also have some struggles no doubt. It was pretty awful watching them wander through Coles on Saturday morning, looking very confused by the empty shelves and all the people stressing out around them.

Anyone else been reading about the UK's "herd immunity" approach to the virus? Basically, the idea is that you isolate the most vulnerable (the elderly, the immuno-compromised etc) but don't put many restrictions on everyone else. They are calculating that if 60% of the (healthy) population gets the virus, they will build up immunity to it and future breakouts wont be as severe. Such an approach also has less economic impact. No other countries seem to be adopting the same strategy though. And the UK government now seems to be getting cold feet as well. Seems pretty risky, but I'm certainly no expert so what would I know. Boris Johnson could emerge from this as a genius or a super-villain, depending on the outcome. www.vox.com/world/2020/3/15/21180414/coronavirus-uk-herd-immunity-vallance-johnson
